To our knowledge we are the only J-Series Performance company that offers any type of guarantee or warranty, backing all of our horsepower claims! If you break a stud or lift a head within that first year from your order date WE REPLACE THE ENTIRE SET OF STUDS (Knock on wood, to date we have zero failures)
Well Guys/Gals, we had something in the works for over the past year and half (2022) and with COVID and limited supplies of just about everything, including good metals (even hardware stores are running out of Grade 8 bolts) it took some doing, time and mostly $$. We are proud to announce our HalferLand Performance Honda J-Series 8740 Chromoly Head Studs. We now offer one of the most robust yet most AFFORDABLE J-Series head studs on the market.
To be fair and compare, ARP 8740's are rated to 180,000psi rating and running around $340+ range, then add shipping onto that. ARP2000's are running around $430++ shipping/tax (2018) and are rated at 220,000 psi.....our HalferLand Performance Honda J-Series Chromoly Head Studs are only $295.95, 300-1000hp+ capable, guaranteed for a year up to 1000hp, 220,000psi rated (same as ARP2000's), are capable up to 1000hp and are MADE IN THE USA with our partner manufacturer that specializes in 2000+whp Diesel Performance engines..so you know they can make a product to last. They are perfect not just for all high horsepower builds but also ANY rebuild, even NA 300whp or below setups. As you know, one major hurdle with any engine is a good cylinder head to block seal, regardless of power level. Stock head bolts are torque to yield, meaning once stretched to OEM torque specs that's it, they can no longer be used. Our HalferLand Performance Honda J Series Chromoly head studs are just that, Studs, which apply a higher clamping force opposed to bolts that twist down to tighten, with head studs the nut is what applies the directly downward pressure/clamping load, not a twisting pressure as bolts do. So even a NA 300whp build will benefit from adding our HalferLand Performance Chromoly Cylinder Head Studs. On top of that, they are also engineered to withstand 220,000psi of tensile strength or pressures, allowing for as much as 1000+HP.
Our HLP Head Studs also allow ALL OF THE CLAMPING FORCE with them being able to hold the same torque specs as ARP 2000's (not the cheaper ARP8740's) at 95ftlbs of torque!
~~~~ FEATURES / SPECS ~~~~
- ARP 8740 Rated to 180,000psi - No warranty or guarantee
- ARP 2000's Rate to 220,000psi - No warranty or guarantee
~~ REPLACEMENT SPECS ~~~
- Stock Length = 7.008" or 178mm
- Suggested Stretch/Replacement Point = 0.040" / 1mm of stretch (7.048" or 179mm overall length)
- While being reusable there is a lifespan on all head studs (not just ours). We suggest measuring your studs new and then periodically throughout their lifespan. If measured and found to be stretched beyond .040" Cold, they may still hold but are fatigued and towards the end of their life. While they will still hold, the best course of action would be to replace them at this point or risk potential failure down the road. Obviously this will be more prevalent the higher in HP your setup gets. A 500whp J-Series shouldn't need to replace them basically ever, where a 1000+whp J-series engine may need to at the end of their race season or further down the line.
So roughly 900whp but capable of more, only with a shorter life span as you see with all cylinder head fasteners in any brands, and also due to the additional combustion pressure seen at those 1000+whp levels)
- INSTALLATION -
- NOTE The beveled/flared course threaded end of the stud is down and installs into the block. The finer/thinner threading is up or the head/nut side.
- PRE-INSTALL - Clean all thread with a brush or cleaner to assure all dirt and debris is removed to prevent any sticking or binding when tightening, reassuring a proper torque reading
- LUBE - Be sure to use the provided thread torque lube on the top side (Allen Key side that gets the nuts and washer) threads to prevent binding during install, applying lube to the threads of the Allen key side of the stud, washer and bottom of the nut.
THE BLOCK SIDE THREADS CAN BE INSTALLED DRY BUT SHOULD BE TAPPED PRIOR TO INSTALL TO ENSURE NO DEBRIS IS IN THE HEAD STUD/BOLT HOLES WITHIN THE BLOCK.
- TORQUE SPECS - Please adhere to OEM Torque specs. For higher horsepower setups or if you simply want a larger clamping load, you may torque over stock specs, according to your requirements and to our torque specs suggestions below. Additional torque added to the stud will have a multiplying effect to clamping load, so it doesn't take much. Studs alone with a directly downward clamping load already exceed oem bolts. Adding even 5 ft lbs over stock will far surpass OEM clamping loads for higher HP engines/Setups.
Please refer to the last photo in the listing for our HalferLand Head Studs Installation Torque Sequence/Steps and also our "Higher load setup" torque specs below.
- STUD INTO BLOCK - When installing the stud into the block you will see an allen key style hole to help with tightening (Allen key side up). It's important not to over torque them. Before installing the stud into the block it's always best to tap each block bolt hole to ensure there is no dirt or debris that can throw the torque specs off or cause the bolt to turn in the block.
You should bottom the stud out into the block and then BACK OFF (yes, loosen) the studs 3-4 full 360° revolutions/turns out. Remember, unlike bolts that has a twisting effect, the stud is getting it's clamping force from the nut directly downward. Fully tightening the stud into the block can lead to sticking over time, making them difficult to remove (this goes for all brands of head studs) and if the stud moves during tightening you could run the risk of over tightening into the softer aluminum block causing damage. NOTE - IF THE STUD MOVES IN THE BLOCK DURING TIGHTENING/ TORQUING THE HEADS, ITS BEST TO LOOSEN AND RESET THE STUD IN THE BLOCK AND START OVER..THIS ENSURES A PROPER TORQUE PATTERN AND EVEN CLAMPING LOAD ACROSS THE ENTIRE HEAD.
- Suggested Stretch/Replacement Point = 0.035"
- While being reusable there is a lifespan on all head studs (not just ours). We suggest measuring your studs new and then periodically throughout their lifespan. If measured and found to be stretched beyond .035" Cold, they may still hold but are fatigued and towards the end of their life. The best course of action would be to replace them at this point or risk potential failure down the road. Obviously this will be more prevalent in higher HP setups.
TORQUE SPECS
Please
follow the OEM Torque Spec’s and Sequence when installing our HLP Head
Studs. Below you'll find our suggested torque specs based off of your setups HP range. Please refer to your repair manual
for the torque sequence (also shown in the last listing image), torque specs and suggested range for our head studs is
below.
OEM Specs (up to 300hp)
Step 1 = 29 ft lbs
Step 2 = 51 ft
lbs
Step 3 = 73 ft lbs
300-450whp
Step 1 = 29 ft lbs
Step 2
= 51 ft lbs
Step 3 = 80 ft lbs
Beyond the 450whp torque specs, due to higher clamping loads extra
stud stretching may occur or cause for faster replacement times. Always check
stretch before re-using. This holds true for all bolt and studs, not just ours.
500whp-750whp
Step 1 = 29 ft lbs
Step 2 = 51 ft lbs
Step 3 = 90 ft lbs
800-1000whp
and Up
* At this torque rating replacement of the studs will be more frequent. Adhere to the .040" or 1mm strech replacement specs*
Step 1 = 29 ft lbs
Step 2 = 51 ft lbs
Step 3 = 95 ft lbs
